Optimal Model for Network Training Project
Overview
The aim of the Optimal Model for Network Training project is to produce a consistent policy to support, define and resource networks, and ensure equity across all programs (prevocational and vocational) in planning for transition as we move into a post-Garling era.
The Project team will review current policy and practice relating to three broad areas:
- Generic Principles and Policy
- Infrastructure
- Education and Professional Development
The model will be underpinned by a set of generic principles and policies. The first in development is a document titled Generic Principles for the Delivery of Postgraduate Medical Training in NSWwhich is now in a consultation process.
The starting point for the development of a standardised model began with the development of a policy for support for Site Directors of Training (this policy is yet to be finalised). The process of standardising such support across different programs will be extended to include Network Directors and Education Support Officers. Because there are clear differences in both infrastructure and education and training resources across training programs a policy will be developed to provide equitable support for all programs.
The Psychiatry Education Support Fund has made a significant contribution to the development of education and training resources in Psychiatry. Likewise, the Basic Physicians Master Class series is a good example of education resourcing aimed at supporting education and training from a state-wide perspective. IMET is currently examining options to broaden and expand Education Support Funding to provide a model to encourage innovation across the training programs.
The development of a standardised approach to network training is an organisational priority for IMET. The project team will report to IMET by 30 June 2009.
The project team will consult with staff involved in training from all the current programs and those under implementation or review. Consultation meetings have been arranged with representatives of:
· Chairs of the State Training Councils
· NSW Department of Health and Area Health Senior Medical Administrators
· Trainees and CMOs
· Network Directors of Training and Education Support Officers
· Directors of Prevocational Education and Training and JMO Managers
