The Geoff Marel Award Nominations

Who deserves recognition for the effort they make on behalf of junior doctors?

Nominations for the NSW Geoff Marel Award are now open.  The deadline for entries is Friday 9 October 2009.

The Geoff Marel Award is an annual prize awarded by the NSW Institute of Medical Education and Training. The award recognises the work of an individual who has made a substantial contribution to the education and support of prevocational trainees.

Background

From 1994, Clinical Associate Professor Geoff Marel served many roles on behalf of the Postgraduate Medical Council of NSW.  Geoff Marel became the Chair of the Standards and Allocation Committee in 1996, in this time he worked to implement an accreditation process that maintained standards and provided support for Prevocational Trainees.  Geoff Marel was a long-time committed contributor to prevocational training and an advocate for trainee welfare. He is remembered for his vision, creativity, insight and humanity.

Following his sudden death in 1999, the PMC sought to recognise the significant work of Geoff Marel through an annual award.  The Geoff Marel Award would recognise excellence in the support of junior doctors.  This prestigious award has been continued by NSW IMET in memory of the late Geoff Marel.
