Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Allocation of Medical Graduates to Internships in NSW Hospitals 2011 and Beyond

Are we still accepting applications to commence a medical internship to commence in 2010?

We are no longer accepting applications for internship commencing in 2010. If you are interested in applying for internship then you would need to apply for commencement in 2011 (applications for 2011 are not yet open).

How do I apply for an internship starting in 2011?

If you are seeking an internship in NSW  for 2011, you will apply online in the same way as in previous years. Application dates will be published early 2010 and applicants should check the IMET website in February/ March 2010 for final dates.

Should the number of internship positions available exceed the number of guaranteed graduates then the NSW health Priority list will be used to fill the remaining positions.

What is the priority list?

In July 2006, following a council of Australian Governments (COAG) agreement, the NSW Government Guaranteed internship places to commonwealth supported medical Graduates from NSW Universities.

In 2007, the NSW Department of Health developed a priority list to be applied in the event that the number of internship positions available was greater than the number of guaranteed medical graduates. This was applied for the first time for allocation for 2010.

Guaranteed

  • Australian Citizen and permanent resident graduates from NSW universities;
  • Australian Citizen and permanent resident graduates from interstate universities who completed year 12 studies in NSW.

Non- Guarunteed

Australian Citizens and permanent residents

  • Commonwealth Supported place and domestic full fee paying graduates of interstate universities
  • AMC Graduates

New Zealand Citizens

  • Graduates of New Zealand Universities, and AMC graduates resident in New Zealand

Non- Permanent Residents

  • Graduates of NSW universities
  • Graduates of Interstate and New Zealand universities
  • AMC graduates

Which Graduates are guaranteed a position for 2011?

Commonwealth Supported Places and existing domestic full fee medical graduates who either, graduated from a NSW university or who completed year 12 studies in NSW are guaranteed a position in 2011 and in subsequent years.

Which graduates are NOT guaranteed a position for 2011?

Commonwealth supported places and existing domestic full fee medical graduates from interstate universities and international full fee paying medical graduates from NSW and interstate universities.

Are New Zealand Citizens who are in a commonwealth supported place or a domestic fee place in NSW university guaranteed an intership in NSW?

Yes. The Australian Governement recognises New Zealand citizens living in Australia as equivalent to permanent residents through the special category visa (Sub class 444).

All Commonwealth supported places (CSP and Domestic full fee medical graduates) from NSW universities will be guaranteed an internship.

If you are NOT guaranteed a position, is it worth still applying for allocation for 2011?

Yes, for 2011 it is likey that the number of internship positions available will be greater than the number of guaranteed graduates and so a number of the non guaranteed graduates will be allocated to fill the remaining positions.

Will merit ranking be used for the non guaranteed group?

On behalf of the Department of Health, IMET had been examining the possibility of introducing an assesment of applicant's non technical skills to allow them to be ranked according to merit. The Department of Health, based on advice, has decided NOT to proceed with a merit based assesment for entry to the allocation pool for allocation in 2011. The Priority list will be used to fill any remaining positions in the allocation pool once the guaranteed applicants have been allocated.

Does IMET allocate interns to work in ACT Hospitals?

NSW IMET allocates to 14 prevocational training networks in NSW. NSW IMET does not allocate to network 15 which includes facilites in ACT. Applicants wishing to work in ACT should contact ACT Health.
