Oncology Training Review

NSW IMET has conducted a review of Oncology Training in NSW across the Medical Oncology, Radiation Oncology and Palliative Medicine specialties on behalf of the Cancer Institute NSW.  The purpose of the review is to oversee the development of a model for a sustainable training network for these three oncology based specialties.

The Steering Committee and Project Team have consulted extensively with key stakeholders including NSW Health, Directors of Area Cancer Services, and Consultants and Trainees from accredited training sites. For the Steering Committee Terms of Reference, click here.

Needs Analysis

During the first phase of the review IMET spoke to trainees, trainers, and medical administration from 18 accredited training sites across NSW.  Approximately 90 trainees, trainers, and area health service administrators attended.  An online survey was also provided to ensure there was a mechanism for people to provide feedback if they were unable to attend one of the Focus Groups- 24 responses were received.

A Discussion Paper was prepared from the information and feedback provided during consultation.  This was circulated widely to the Oncology Training Reference Group, approximately 144 people.  To read the Discussion Paper click here.

Discussion Paper

A Consultation Forum was held on 10 June 2009 to bring together relevant groups and individuals to dscuss the issues and progress the draft proposals.  It presented an opportunity to workshop some of the more complicated aspects, and to get broad agreement from stakeholders on the draft proposals.  There were 28 attendees with good representation from the three specialties, regional training sites, consultants and trainees.
