The Geoff Marel Award Nominations
Who deserves recognition for the effort they make on behalf of junior doctors?
Nominations for the NSW Geoff Marel Award are now open. The deadline for entries is Friday 9 October 2009.
The Geoff Marel Award is an annual prize awarded by the NSW Institute of Medical Education and Training. The award recognises the work of an individual who has made a substantial contribution to the education and support of prevocational trainees.
Background
From 1994, Clinical Associate Professor Geoff Marel served many roles on behalf of the Postgraduate Medical Council of NSW. Geoff Marel became the Chair of the Standards and Allocation Committee in 1996, in this time he worked to implement an accreditation process that maintained standards and provided support for Prevocational Trainees. Geoff Marel was a long-time committed contributor to prevocational training and an advocate for trainee welfare. He is remembered for his vision, creativity, insight and humanity.
Following his sudden death in 1999, the PMC sought to recognise the significant work of Geoff Marel through an annual award. The Geoff Marel Award would recognise excellence in the support of junior doctors. This prestigious award has been continued by NSW IMET in memory of the late Geoff Marel.
Eligibility Criteria
The award is open to individuals from either NSW or the ACT who are:
- Directors of Prevocational Education and Training
- Medical Administrators
- Term Supervisors
- JMO Managers
- Clinicians and other individuals involved in Prevocational issues
Assessment Criteria
The nomineeswill be assessed against the following criteria:
Has the nominee:
• enhanced the clinical performance of Prevocational Trainees? • enhanced the remediation process for Prevocational Trainees? • improved the working conditions of Prevocational Trainees? • enhanced the performance assessment of Prevocational Trainees? • provided support to Prevocational Trainees beyond expectations of their role? • developed a culture that supports Prevocational work and education?
