Rural Scholarship Grants

A scholarship (to the value of $2,000) will be awarded to trainees who complete double the minimum requirement of a rural rotation (minimum RANZCP NSW requirement is 3 months). The scholarship is provided to assist with approved educational expenses such as relevant courses and exam fees. This is capped at a maximum of $6,000 per trainee per annum. Trainees based in rural sites are also eligible. For details refer to the ‘Principles for the Delivery of Psychiatry Training in NSW'.

The process for application and payment of the grant is as follows:

  1. The trainee completes the Trainee Educational Expenses Reimbursement Form, attaches receipts and forwards to the network Education Support Officer (ESO).
  2. The ESO forwards the form and attached receipts to the Network Director of Training for authorisation.
  3. The ESO sends the completed form with attached receipts to the applicable Area Health Service finance department.
  4. The Area Health Service reimburses the trainee directly, via the payroll system.
  5. The Area Health Service raises an invoice to IMET for reimbursement of the Rural Scholarship Grant paid to the trainee.

Should you have any queries regarding this, please contact your network Education Support Officer in the first instance. For a list of psychiatry training networks and relevant contact details, click here.

2005 Review of Psychiatry Training

In the first half of 2005, the Medical Training and Education Council of NSW (now NSW IMET) undertook a review of psychiatry training delivery in NSW following a request from the NSW Minister for Health.  The review process included the: identification of key issues impacting on psychiatry training, development of proposals aimed at addressing these issues, broad State-wide consultations with the relevant groups and individuals and the development of the recommendations for enhancing psychiatry training delivery in NSW. The resulting final document entitled 'Principles for the Delivery of Psychiatry Training in NSW' was endorsed by the NSW Minister for Health in July 2005 for implementation from January 2006.
