NEW UPDATE: General Information on the Western Paediatric Network

There are three paediatric training networks in NSW. Each network is group of training sites and generally includes metropolitan, outer-metropolitan and rural training sites. Each network has the same structure, including an NGC and specific network staff.

Network Staff

Each Network has the following staff:

• A Network Director of Paediatric Physician Training (NDPPT) to lead and develop the program across each network
• A Network Education Support Officer (ESO) to assist the NDPPT organise and administer the Network Training Program

Stream Staff

Four Stream coordinators have been appointed who coordinate statewide training initiatives for their stream for both basic and advanced trainees.

Benefits of the Network System for Trainees

• Equitable access to education initiatives for all trainees
• A co-ordinated approach to facilitate access to training facilities across sites
• Improved access to professional development opportunities
• Increased collaboration amongst trainees, clinicians and health service managers about issues facing Paediatric Physician training and service delivery
• Greater transparency in determining hospital rotations within existing 'networks'
• Well developed appeals mechanisms if sites are not providing appropriate training
• Greater exposure to a variety of training opportunities (provided at different sites) in order to fulfil College requirements
• Trainees also have access to protected teaching time

Rural Scholarship Fund

The process for application and payment of the grant is as follows:

1. The trainee completes the Trainee Educational Expenses Reimbursement Form attaches receipts and forwards it to their Network Education Support Officer (ESO). Applications must be made after the rural terms have been completed.
2. The ESO forwards the form and attached receipts to the Network Director of Training for authorisation.
3. The ESO sends the completed form with attached receipts to the applicable Area Health Service finance department. 4. The Area Health Service reimburses the trainee directly, via the payroll system.
5. The Area Health Service raises an invoice to IMET for reimbursement of the Rural Scholarship Grant paid to the trainee.

Term Evaluations

For every term a trainee completes, they MUST complete a term evaluation form and submit it to their Network Education Support Officer. This feedback is important for ensuring that trainees are able to provide feedback on education, training and supervisors within their network. Term Evaluation feedback is used by the Networks to make necessary changes to their training program.

In 2007, the PPTC endorsed a generic term evaluation tool to be used by all networks. To view this form, click here.

Term Supervisor Reports

Term Supervisor reports are completed at the end of each term (four times per ear) by the term supervisors. These forms provide each trainee with important feedback on their performance throughout the term and are reviewed by the NDPPT.

In 2007, the PPTC endorsed a generic term supervisor report to be used by all networks. To view this form,  click here.
