Paediatric Physician Training in NSW – A Networked Program

In July 2005, at the request of the Minister for Health, the NSW Institute of Medical Education and Training (IMET) conducted a review into the delivery of paediatric physician training in NSW (incorporating basic training and 21 advanced sub-specialties) for submission in June 2006.

The review process included the:

  • establishment of an advisory group;
  • development of a discussion paper for general review and refinement;
  • consultation with relevant interested parties;
  • development of proposed recommendations.

What were the outcomes of the review?

The final report was endorsed by the NSW Minister for Health in April 2007, for implementation from January 2008.

The report recommended that training for paediatrics be delivered through training networks. The intention of networked training was to facilitate equitable distribution of trainees, while maintaining high quality training. The purpose of the training networks is to ensure a sustainable system of training while fulfilling the clinical service needs required throughout NSW.

Following the review, the Principles were developed to assist with the delivery of paediatric training. To read the Principles of Paediatric Training in NSW, click here.

What is a Training Network?

A training network is:

  • A grouping of training sites (hospitals and health services) as part of a combined training program and in accordance with agreed principles;
  • Endorsed by College, Health Department and Health Services
  • Supported by governance structures and dedicated staff
  • Different from 'informal' networks

In 2007, the paediatric networked training program was introduced in NSW with three established networks. The networks were closely aligned with the Child Health Networks.

  • Each Network will be overseen by a Network Governance Committee (NGC)
  • All three networks will be overseen by the Paediatric Physician Training Council (PPTC)
