Governance of Advanced Cardiology Training in NSW

The advanced training program in each network is overseen by the NSW Cardiology Training Committee (CTC) and a local Cardiology Network Committee.

Cardiology Training Committee (CTC)

The purpose of the Cardiology Training Committee (CTC) is to promote high quality cardiology training and to encourage integration between basic and advanced physician training by providing a central forum for the major groups of cardiology training. The CTC ensures the effective functioning of the six Cardiology Network Committees in NSW. The CTC reports formally to the NSW Physician Training Council via a bi-annual report.

What are the roles and responsibilities of the CTC?

The CTC is responsible for:

  • Liaising with the Cardiology Training Networks and the NSW Physician Training Council
  • Approving any additional advanced cardiology training sites
  • Evaluating the composition and workforce of the Cardiology Training Networks in NSW
  • Overseeing the development and implementation of the state-wide cardiology education program and other training or educational activities
  • Overseeing the distribution of funds

The CTC also provides the opportunity for advanced cardiology stakeholders to be involved in the decision making processes relevant to the delivery of advanced cardiology training in NSW. Issues are referred to the CTC by members of the committee, the Network Committees, the NSW Advanced Cardiology Trainees’ Committee or individual trainees.

 Network Committees

Each network is governed by a local Network Committee. It is the joint responsibility of the Network Committee and the relevant health services to maintain and improve the quality of advanced cardiology training within the network, in accordance with standards and criteria set by the RACP.

Ultimately, through its work, the Network Committee is responsible for the attraction, recruitment, and retention of trainees within its network. All Network Committees are overseen by the NSW Cardiology Training Committee.

What are the roles and responsibilities of the Network Committees?

The role of the Network Committee:

  • Ensure safe, high quality training for advanced cardiology trainees through good management of the network and its training program
  • Provide an opportunity for network stakeholders (trainees, supervisors and administrators) to participate actively in the training program of the network
  • Provide a forum for discussion of ideas and strategies to improve training within the network and remedy identified deficiencies at a local level
  • Ensure transparent and equitable management of network matters
Provide a locus of accountability for training within the networks

To read the Generic Network Committee Terms of Reference, click here.

Each Network Committee is required to meet two to three times each clinical year. All meetings must have their minutes recorded.  The Network Committee will report to the Cardiology Training Committee quarterly.

Trainee Representation

Trainees play a fundamental role in the management of their training. The Terms of Reference for both the CTC and the Network Committees require that there is trainee representation on these committees. Trainees are also represented on the Advanced Cardiology Trainees’ Committee.
