The BPT Networks

There are nine basic physician training networks in NSW. Each network is group of training sites and generally includes metropolitan, outer-metropolitan and rural training sites. Each network has the same structure, including an NGC and specific network staff.
Network Staff

Each network is required to have the following staff:

  • A Director of Physician Training (DPT) at each site in the network with paid dedicated time
  • A Network Director of Physician Training (NDPT) to lead and develop the program across each network
  • A full-time Network Education Support Officer (ESO) to assist the NDPT organise and administer the Network Training Program

For information on individual networks, contact the relevant network staff:

Rural Scholarship Fund

The purpose of the Rural Scholarship Fund is to:

  • provide incentive to trainees who exceed the minimum College requirements for the exposure to rural clinical practice
  • reduce the financial burden experienced by doctors undertaking rural rotations
  • support access to education and training during rural rotations

The process for application and payment of the grant is as follows:

  • You must complete the Trainee Educational Expenses Reimbursement Form and forward it to your Network Education Support Officer (ESO), attaching a copy of all receipts.
  • All applications must be made after the rural terms have been completed.
  • The ESO forwards the form and attached receipts to the Network Director of Training for authorisation.
  • The ESO sends the approved form with attached receipts to the applicable Area Health Service finance department.
  • The Area Health Service reimburses the trainee directly, via the payroll system.
  • The Area Health Service raises an invoice to IMET for reimbursement of the Rural Scholarship Grant paid to the trainee.

Evaluating Education and Training in the Networks

Term Evaluations

Each term, every trainee is required to complete a term evaluation form and submit it to their Network Education Support Officer. This feedback is important for ensuring that trainees are able to provide feedback on education, training and supervision within their network. Term Evaluation feedback is used by the Networks to make necessary changes to their training program.

Each BPT network has developed an individual term evaluation tool.

Progress Review

Progress review forms are completed at the end of each term (four times per year) by the term supervisors. These forms provide each trainee with important feedback on their performance throughout the term and are used as part of their ongoing appraisal. All progress review forms are reviewed by the Network Director of Physician Training.

In 2007, a working group developed a generic progress review form. This generic template is used by the nine basic physician training networks.
