What happens at a Survey?

The Survey Team

A survey team usually consists of a minimum of three surveyors comprising of at least one person from the following groups:

  • Medical Administrator
  • Clinician
  • Junior Medical Officer

All surveyors complete training before undertaking an accreditation survey. For more information click here.

Before the survey

The facility completes a self-assessment and returns it to IMET along with supplementary documentation. Click here for the self-assessment.

The survey team will then prepare for the survey by:

  1. examining the self-assessment and supplementary documentation provided by the facility
  2. examining the previous report (if there has been one)
  3. reviewing the actions taken to respond to the recommendations and any proviso from the previous survey
  4. negotiating the survey timetable and any additional survey needs.
During the survey

A survey usually takes two days and includes:

  1. interviews with junior medical staff, term supervisors, clinical teachers, Directors of Prevocational Education and Training, JMO Managers and medical administrators
  2. a tour of all educational and prevocational trainee facilities such as the library and accommodation
  3. a debriefing at the end with relevant facility staff to discuss the survey findings.

After the survey

After the survey:

  1. a comprehensive report is finalised by the survey team including commendations and recommendations for improving the quality of prevocational training
  2. the report is sent to the Prevocational Accreditation Committee where a decision is made on the length and status of accreditation
  3. the facility and Area Health Service is notified in writing of the accreditation decision, receives a copy of the final report and a Certificate of Accreditation.
